Mystery shopping explained

What is mystery shopping?

Mystery shopping, also called secret shopping, is an unannounced evaluation in which a trained shopper experiences a business as a real customer would, then reports exactly what happened against a set scorecard. It shows owners the experience their customers actually get, rather than the one they intend to deliver.

How mystery shopping works

  1. The business chooses what to evaluate, such as a phone inquiry, a web form or a visit, and which standards matter.
  2. Those standards become an observable scorecard.
  3. A vetted shopper completes the call, inquiry or visit as an ordinary customer.
  4. The shopper records timings, names, specifics and photo evidence.
  5. The business receives a scored report with the findings and recommended next steps.

Types of mystery shops

What mystery shopping measures

  • Speed: how long until a customer gets a useful answer?
  • Accuracy: is the information correct and specific?
  • Process: are greetings, needs discovery and offers delivered consistently?
  • Environment: is the location clean, stocked and ready?
  • Follow-through: does promised follow-up actually happen?

Mystery shopping vs. customer surveys

Surveys tell you how customers felt afterward. Mystery shopping tells you what actually happened, step by step, measured against your standards. Most businesses get the clearest picture by using both. See our full comparison.

Who uses mystery shopping?

Any business where the customer experience drives revenue, including restaurants, automotive, retail, hospitality, home services and patient-facing practices. Browse all industries.

Is mystery shopping legitimate work?

Yes. Real mystery shopping companies never charge shoppers to join or ask them to wire money or buy gift cards. If you want to do this work, read how to become a mystery shopper.
