How to become a mystery shopper

(New to this? See what is mystery shopping.) Mystery shoppers, also called secret shoppers, visit, call or message businesses as ordinary customers and then report what really happened. Businesses use those reports to improve service.

This guide explains what the work involves, who can do it, how pay works and how to avoid the scams that copy real mystery shopper jobs.

What a mystery shopper actually does

  • Visits a store, restaurant, office or service business, or calls, emails, texts or fills in a web form, as a normal customer.
  • Follows a short scenario, such as asking about a product, booking an appointment or requesting a quote.
  • Notes timings, names and specific details, and takes photos where the scorecard asks for them.
  • Completes a structured scorecard soon after, with factual comments rather than opinions.

Mystery shopper vs. secret shopper

They are the same job. "Secret shopper" is the more casual name; "mystery shopping" is what the industry usually calls it. Both describe paid, unannounced evaluations of the customer experience.

Step by step: becoming a Takeover Verified Shopper

  1. Check the requirements. Takeover Verified Shoppers must be 21 or older, pass a photo ID check, own a smartphone that takes photos and write clear, honest comments in English.
  2. Create a free shopper profile. Sign up with email, Apple or Google and choose the shopper role. Joining never costs anything.
  3. Complete the Verified Shopper application. Answer the conduct and conflict-of-interest questions and upload your ID for review.
  4. Claim a shop near you. Once approved, browse open jobs in your city. Each job shows its payout, location, contact type and requirements before you claim.
  5. Do the visit, call or inquiry. Act as an ordinary customer, follow the scenario, and capture the photos and timings the scorecard asks for.
  6. Submit your scorecard and get paid. Score each moment, add specific comments and submit. Approved submissions release the payout shown on the job.

How pay works

  • Each job shows its payout before you claim it. There is no hidden rate.
  • Some jobs include an approved purchase or expense, which is shown up front.
  • Payouts are released after your submission passes its completeness check and is approved.
  • Mystery shopping is flexible side income, not a full-time salary. How much work is available depends on businesses ordering shops in your area.

How to spot a mystery shopping scam

Real mystery shopping companies never ask you to pay to join, deposit a check and send money back, wire funds or buy gift cards. Treat any of those requests as a scam and stop replying.

  • You are asked for an upfront fee or a "certification" payment.
  • You receive a check and are told to send part of it to someone else.
  • The "assignment" is to evaluate a money-transfer service or buy gift cards.
  • The job offer arrives unsolicited by text or email with no way to verify the company.

Tips for doing well

  • Read the whole scenario before you go.
  • Write down times and names straight after each interaction.
  • Stay factual: describe what happened, not how you felt about it.
  • Submit promptly while the details are fresh.
  • Claim only jobs you can complete in the stated window.
